This is an original mixed media painting by David John.

This painting builds on my geometric abstract style, using layered shapes to create structure over a chaotic, abstract instinctive base. The background is made up of loose, expressive marks and colour, while the raised grid cuts across it, breaking things up and pulling it back into some kind of order.

As with all my work, there was no set plan going into it. Everything developed on the canvas, reacting to what was already there. The contrast between the clean, structured lines and the raw, messy abstract layers underneath is a big part of what drives the piece.
There are fragments of calligraphy worked into sections, not meant to be fully read, more like passing thoughts captured in the moment. Some stand out, but most disappear, which feels right for how ideas and memories tend to behave.

It’s a balance between control and letting go, I’m not trying to direct what someone should see in this painting, my intention is to create something that invites you to slow down, look a bit closer, and take from it whatever you find in there.
