This is an original mixed media painting by David John.

This painting carries the same geometric structure but feels more stripped back in colour compared to some of my other pieces, blues and earth tones do most of the work, with the odd sharper mark cutting through, which keeps it grounded but still active.

Like the rest of my work, there was no set plan, it started with loose, expressive layers, building up the surface without overthinking it, the framework came later, laid over the top to break everything up and give it some direction, it’s that push and pull between the free, messy base and the controlled lines that shapes the piece.

There’s a lot of calligraphy running through this one as the words chosen were very special and specific so required more than usual. It drifts in and out across the surface, sometimes clearer, sometimes almost completely lost. It’s not meant to be read properly, more like snippets of thoughts caught in the moment and left to settle into the painting.

The overlapping sections and angles create a sense of movement, almost like everything is shifting underneath the surface but being held in place at the same time.

I’m not trying to tell a story, it’s more about giving you something to spend time with, picking out details, letting your eyes move around, and finding whatever stands out to you.
